an odd fact about rice in the Bible

*Be sure to register for our Scripture Memory with Kids workshop!

Hey [CORRECTED_NAME GOES HERE], I learned an odd fact about the Bible today. You see, my family woke up early this morning and drove out to a village not too far from our home in Thailand to plant rice.

The scenery was beautiful but the sun was brutally hot. The whole process of planting rice requires stepping into mud so deep that you sink down almost to your knees.

Rice is first grown in extremely dense clusters and then spread out by hand across a flooded field by sticking a few stalks deep in the mud.

As I was standing out there, extremely muddy and pouring sweat, I knew I was going to need to write this email later in the day. So my mind started trying to find some silly connection or analogy between rice and the Christian life...

...or rice and our memory?

...or better yet, rice and the Bible!

I'm sure there's some creative connection, but when I did some digging, I discovered a weird detail of the Bible that I never knew.

Despite the fact that rice is a global staple that currently feeds almost 4 billion people per day, the word "rice" is never mentioned in the Bible.

Not once!

The dry climate of ancient Israel, Egypt or the Near East simply didn't allow for rice to grow. The Bible mentions plenty of different grains, but not once does it mention rice.

So yea...I obviously don't have a deep theological insight to share with you this week. But now at least you know that rice was never mentioned in the Bible.

You're welcome. ๐Ÿ˜†
