Josh Summers | Bible Memory Goal

do you trust Luke's memory?

Hey [CORRECTED_NAME GOES HERE], so I have this health coach who helps me with my workouts and diet, and he's asked me to start documenting all the food that I eat each day in an app. It's not a difficult task, but I forgot to log my food this last Monday and Tuesday and I went back in to fill out it. And guess what?

Less then 3 days later, I had forgotten what I had to eat earlier in the week.

I'm sure you know how that feels, right? (or is it just me who is getting old?) It feels like our memory fades faster than we realize. So if that's true, I have a question for you:

How can we be confident that Jesus' disciples remembered everything he did and said?

It's a valid question and one that I was afraid to ask as a kid. Even if the Gospels were written years after Jesus' death (most scholars think it was decades), would we expect them to remember His words verbatim?

This week, I asked Biblical scholar Dr. Craig Keener these exact questions, and his answers not only gave me more confidence in the Bible, it also gave me some interesting insight into the Greco-Roman world and the expectations of a "disciple" in those times.

Enjoy!

Dr. Craig Keener is a professor at Asbury Theological Seminary and author of numerous books and commentaries...yet he spent a good portion of his life as an atheist. Listen as he explains the role of a disciple in Jesus' time.

Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.

What's Happening in the Community

Creating a Prayer Bible (reminder)

Reminder! Those who are Patrons are welcome to join us for a conversation about how to create a Prayer Bible tomorrow morning (Saturday). Valerie’s recent interview sparked a wave of interest in creating Prayer Bibles and we're going to discuss how different people approach this.

If you're a Patron, RSVP for the meeting here.

If you're not a Patron...why don't you join us!

In Person Meeting

One of the best parts of an online community is the opportunity to turn virtual friendships into real-life meet ups. That's what happened this last week when our friend Keith Ferrin (speaker at last year's Scripture Sync) met up with Valerie Long after one of his speaking engagements.

Memory Accelerator Program

You might have heard about this last week, but we're testing out a new way to engage with our Patron program. If you've been curious how encouragement and accountability might impact your Scripture memory but you're not ready to commit for a whole year, the Memory Accelerator Program is a three-month sprint to push you forward in your memorization and give you a taste of what our Patron program is like. Give it a try to see for yourself!

$5 Audiobook + PDF

Did you know that as part of this newsletter, you can download both a PDF and audiobook version of Josh's Memorize What Matters book? It's a short listen (2 hours) and offers some excellent ideas to help you memorize and review Scripture. Also...you help support this ministry, so thank you!

I hope you enjoy the conversation with Dr. Craig Keener this week. My hope and prayer is that these videos, podcast episodes and even these emails can be a catalyst to keep you continually thinking about God's Word and how you can internalize more of it.

God bless!
