how to memorize "the Bible way"

Hey [CORRECTED_NAME GOES HERE], I don't know about you, but I'm pretty tired of all the news of wars, fighting, and politics. It's tempting to want to just shut it all out, delete the news app and pretend nothing is happening.

But it's hard to ignore when we have to wait in line for 30 minutes to get gas here in Thailand because there's a shortage.

That's not a joke. We now have crowdsourced websites and apps popping up to inform us of which gas stations still have gas and which don't. It's crazy.

It's times like this that I'm reminded of one of the big reasons I value the spiritual practice of internalization. There is so much that is competing for our attention every day:

  • ...the news;
  • ...social media feeds;
  • ...YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram;

Each of these represents a voice that we allow into our head. This voice can represent fear, doubt, uncertainty, insecurity. If we're not careful, these voices can control our current mood or even our outlook on life.

Internalization is the act of replacing these VOICES with VERSES.

It replaces fear with comfort, uncertainty with truth, and insecurity with trust.

In the midst of all of these "wars and rumors of wars" (Matthew 24), my encouragement to you this week is to make sure you're not allowing these voices to dominate your mind. Instead, find a verse or passage you can memorize and meditate on to replace it.

Which verses are you choosing to meditate on this month? Reply to this email to let me know...I'd love to hear it!

๐Ÿ“ฃ This is how Jesus memorized (w/ Dr. Ken Berding)

This week Josh talks with Dr. Ken Berding, a professor of New Testament at Biola University and author of the book Bible by Heart: the Bible's Own Method for Scripture Memory. What does the Bible have to say about how to memorize?

Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners - of whom I am the worst.

Submit Your Questions

We want to hear your questions! This next week we have a community Town Hall (Sunday, March 22) and then next Friday we're publishing a Q&A on the YouTube channel. If you have questions about the community or about our Scripture Sync event, you can submit them anonymously here:

This week I'm working on our Patron Gospel Project video where we've memorized the entire gospel of Luke. Stay tuned because we'll be doing daily livestreams during the week before Easter where you can watch/listen to prepare yourself for the celebration of Jesus' death and resurrection.

It's going to be a lot of fun!
