Josh Summers | Bible Memory Goal

so...it's my birthday

Hey [CORRECTED_NAME GOES HERE], in two days I turn 43 years old. I'm shaking my head even as I type that number. At this point in my life, I honestly thought I would have been further along. I thought maturity and wisdom would somehow be something I naturally posessed, not something I was still searching for.

Perhaps you look at people like me that you watch on YouTube or read their books and think "Yup, they've got it all figured out." Trust me...

...we don't.

This past year, I've invited different people into my life to act as a health coach, a marriage counsellor and a spiritual director. Why? Because I need it. I've come to understand that while experience is a good teacher, maturity is built through intentional exercise.

But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.
[Hebrews 5:14 NIV]

I've been thinking a lot about this verse the past couple weeks, and I've turned these thoughts into a 5-minute Greek word study that I hope will encourage you.

If you've ever thought to yourself:

  • Why is it so hard to hear from God?
  • What does it take to go from "milk" to "meat" in my spiritual life?
  • How do I get better at [insert spiritual discipline here]?

These aren't bad questions. And the answer is NOT willpower. God has given you an invitation...how will you respond?

📣 It's not magic. It's also not easy.

Listen to this 5-minute devotional where Josh dives into a single Greek word in Hebrews 5 that changes how you will look at the jump from "milk" to "meat" in your spiritual life.

A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.

— John 13:34-35 (NIV)

COMMUNITY HIGHLIGHT

What's Happening in our Community

Visual Substitutions for Scripture Memory

BC kicked off a creative and practical discussion this week about using visual substitutions to unlock stuck words in memorization. From simple homophones like “for” → 4, “to” → 2, “so” → sewing, or “or” → oar, to more imaginative imagery like picturing God pouring “joy” and a peace symbol into an open head for “May God fill you with all joy and peace” — this thread is full of inventive ideas!

If you’ve ever stalled on a small connecting word or struggled to remember what comes next, this conversation might spark a new technique for you.

What visual cues have you created to help Scripture stick? Join the discussion here.

Scripture Copywork Resource

Sarah shared a beautiful find this week for those who love combining Scripture memory with handwriting practice. She discovered CopyBible.com, which creates thoughtfully designed copywork books—hardstock paper, no bleed-through, spiral bound, with Scripture printed on one page and lined space on the other for writing. If you enjoy slowing down and internalizing Scripture through writing, this could be a meaningful resource to explore. Check out the discussion here.

52 Verse Cards

Are you memorizing the 52 Bible verses with us this year? Did you know that you can purchase physical verse cards that have the verse on one side and the first-letter version on the other? Get yours in either the ESV or NIV here:

I hope these emails continue to be a blessing to you. If you want to say "thank you" or even "happy birthday", the best way you can do that is by reviewing my book on Amazon or rating the podcast. It really does make a difference.

Have a great weekend!
